There has been development kits on the net to hack Canon cameras for a long time. Some of you may remember how the EOS 300D - Digital Rebel was easily cracked to gain some of the features which were only available for the semi-professional Canon EOS DSLR bodies at that time. These kits are also available for some Canon compact cameras.

Wired.com recently published a guide for using Open-Source CHDK (Canon Hacker’s Development Kit), a supplementary firmware version which gives your compact Canon features like a RAW mode, live histogram and longer exposure times.
