Sony announced the New Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T* 24-70 f/2.8 lens for Alpha DSLR cameras.

Technical Specifications and Price:
Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T* 24-70 f/2.8 is a wide-angle AF zoom lens that is designed to work with Sony Alpha range (A100, A200, A300, A350 and A700) and the Konica Minolta 5D and 7D cameras. Constructed of 17 elements in 13 groups with two aspheric elements and two extra-low dispersion elements, T* 24-70 f/2.8 claims excellent contrast and center-to-edge resolution.
The new lens also features Super Sonica Wave Motor (SSM) technology which had been available only for very few Minolta G and Sony G series lenses. SSM system utilizes a solid-state focus drive motor that features silent, high-speed response with high-torque and fine rotational control . There is also a mode selector on the lens barrel for manual and automatic focus as well as a focus hold control.
Price and Availability
The Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA lens will be available for about $1,750 in Spring 2008. We can say that the new lens is reasonably priced considering the high optical standarts expected from Carl Zeiss lenses. We are really looking forward to see the comparison of this lens with the new Nikon Nikkor 24-70 f2.8mm which is known to be one of the best optics in this range.
